Brazilian Jiu Jitsu FAQs

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one of the most useful martial arts for many reasons. When the Gracie family adapted traditional Japanese martial arts such as Judo into a fighting system, they did so in order to give the advantage to a person who is smaller than their combatant or attacker. Since its inception and eventual world wide popularity many Jiu-Jitsu schools have opened across the world teaching the principles of leverage, positioning and timing, among others, to nullify the advantage of a larger opponent.
This depends entirely on personal preference and application. If you are competing in professional or amateur mixed martial arts, then you will likely be spending some time training at a Jiu-Jitsu academy – especially if your upcoming fight is against a wrestler or Jiu-Jitsu practitioner. MMA is all about adapting multiple styles into one in real time during your fight. The best Jiu-Jitsu practitioners tend to focus on competition such as ADCC, IBJJF and various other grappling only competitions. It is common for martial artists to train heavily in BJJ in between fights; if for no other reason than a mandatory medical suspension barring them from contact or striking sparring for weeks or months post fight.
Yes. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was primarily developed as a method of self defense, specifically for people of a smaller stature to be able to defend themselves against a larger and stronger opponent or attacker. This is one of the many reasons why so many people are attracted to BJJ. Women, children, youths and men can benefit from enrolling in Jiu-Jitsu classes. Learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a great way to work on self confidence as well and the added focus and discipline can help students in real world situations.
Absolutely. Jiu-Jitsu classes are a great way to shed some pounds while also learning new skills in self defense and having fun in the process. Even beginner Jiu-Jitsu practitioners will see the benefits in their overall physical and mental health, not just the weight they lose. Because of the physical nature of this world famous martial art, shedding weight is actually a side effect of training yourself to be more physically capable; both on the mat and in the real world. Martial arts in general is an amazing way to learn more about yourself, hone in new skills and lose weight.
